AI Overviews Have Spread To Most Big-Brand Searches
Search for a big brand’s name on Google today and there’s a good chance an AI-generated summary appears before the brand’s own website. Tracking published in late September and early October 2026 shows Google’s AI Overviews spreading fast across brand-name searches. According to Ahrefs, 63 of 100 global brand names showed an AI Overview on 30 September, up from just 5 at the start of July, as covered by Search Engine Journal. Here’s what the data says, why the numbers vary, and what brands should do now.
What the data shows
Ahrefs checked the exact names of 100 global brands in US Google results every week from July to September. By 30 September, 63 of them triggered an AI Overview. In a larger sample of branded keywords, AI Overviews appeared on 82.91% of US desktop results on 29 September, with monthly averages rising from 61.3% in July to 65.1% in August and 73.3% in September.
DemandSphere’s daily tracking of branded keywords saw a sharp jump too: from 26.12% on 1 September to 90.48% on 27 September, before settling at 82.06% on 29 September.
Why the numbers differ

Estimates range from roughly 63% to 93% because each study measured something different: bare brand names versus all branded keywords, different markets, devices, tools and dates. Chris Long of Nectiv reported 93 of 100 enterprise brands in a quick scrape, but didn’t publish the list. The direction is consistent across all of them; the exact share is not settled, so treat any single figure as a snapshot.
What we don’t know yet

- Google hasn’t publicly announced or explained the expansion.
- The impact on branded click-through hasn’t been reliably measured yet.
- Coverage may still move up or down as Google tests.
What this means for brands

A branded search used to be the safest click in marketing: someone types your name, your site comes first. Now Google may summarise your brand before showing your link. Ahrefs notes this could reduce clicks to brands’ own websites and give third-party sites a bigger role in how brands are described. Reviews, forums, news articles and comparison pages may shape what people read about you, and outdated facts can appear under your name.
The shift: your brand name is no longer just a navigational search. It’s a topic Google summarises, so you need to manage what that summary is built from.
6 steps to control your brand summary

- Search your own brand (and “brand + reviews”, “brand + price”) every month and screenshot the AI Overview.
- Fix your facts everywhere: website, Google Business Profile, LinkedIn and directories should all say the same thing.
- Strengthen your About, FAQ and service pages with clear, current, answer-first information.
- Add Organization schema (logo, founder, contact, social profiles) so Google can identify your brand entity.
- Earn reviews and mentions on the third-party sites Google is likely to cite, and respond to them.
- Track branded clicks in Google Search Console and watch for drops after AI Overviews appear.
